Create Variations Programmatically

by JamieMcAllister 4/29/2008 11:35:00 AM

There have been a few queries from people recently about whether Variations could be created programmatically. I started investigating the methods used in the Sharepoint API, but then I happened across some excellent detective work on Michiel Lankamp's Sharepoint Blog.

The method he outlines is unsupported by Microsoft, but if you have the requirement to create variations programmatically, this seems to be the only way you can achieve it at present;

He has also created a project on Codeplex that compliments his article; http://www.codeplex.com/variationsettings

Well done Michiel, you're a credit to the Sharepoint community!

 btw, you might want to create your Variations through a Feature instead of programmatically. If so, check this out; http://www.codeplex.com/variationsfeature

Create Variations Programmatically , fascinated me. I have set out to develop utilizing Silverlight but am finding it is a big learning curve. My previous experience is with php, mysql, most linux based tools and flash. The challenges of using Silverlight to get a good layout which functions speedily in all the established browsers, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome is a big headache that I find is taking umpteen hours to overcome. Interesting to study your views and the comments in your website on Silverlight. I find the tutorial sites and Microsofts offering are rigid and address the identical points, discussion in blogs often covers factual ways to overcome issues which leads me through the learning curve more quickly. Thank you for the note, it has helped in a moderate way to get me through the migration.
